As an art historian, Kenzye Layne focuses her research on modern and contemporary women artists and collectors. As an artist, she has developed a multimedia style reminiscent of Surrealism combined with vivid, maximalist color and symbolism representative of her experience as a queer woman suffering from mental illness.
KS x KL is a tribute to Kay Sage’s 1940 oil painting Lost Record at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art. Sage’s vast dreamscape of isolated organic formations, barren trees, and still water represents feelings of loneliness and isolation as well as hopefulness and perseverance. KS x KL merges the emotional power of Sage’s imaginary landscape with the vibrant colors and symbolism of Layne’s work. The once barren tree becomes enveloped by quilt blocks inspired by women’s embroidery sampler designs. The names that subtly emerge from the calm sea are those of the women-identifying artists and collectors who contributed to the Eskenazi Museum.
Layne graduated from Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) with a BFA in sculpture and a BS in arts management in 2021. She is pursuing an MA in curatorship at IUB with a focus on modern and contemporary women in the arts and expects to graduate in May 2024.
