Nanette Esseck Brewer is the Lucienne M. Glaubinger Curator of Works on Paper. She manages a collection of more than 5,000 prints, drawings, and photographs and oversees a new center dedicated to the study and exhibition of those works. Brewer has served in the curatorial department at the Eskenazi Museum of Art for more than 30 years, first as Acting Curator of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Art, and then as Curator of Exhibitions before heading the Prints, Drawings, and Photographs department beginning in 1991. During her tenure at the museum, Brewer has organized or managed more than 80 exhibitions, including many thematic as well as monographic shows featuring the work of Henri Matisse (2014), Andy Warhol (2011), Hiroshi Sugimoto (2009), James McGarrell (2006), Eldzier Cortor (2005), Thomas Hart Benton (1989), and Georges Rouault (1988). She has also contributed to a number of publications, including A Shared Elegy: Elijah Gowin, Emmet Gowin, Osamu James Nakagawa, Takayuki Ogawa (2017); Grand Allusions: Robert Barnes—Late Works 1985–2015 (2015); American Horizon: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh (2004); Rudy Pozzatti: A Printmaker’s Odyssey (2002); Thomas Hart Benton’s Indiana Murals (2000/2008); and Echo Press: A Decade of Printmaking (1991). She also coordinates the Art and a Movie series, a partnership with the Eskenazi Museum of Art and IU Cinema, which started in 2011. In addition to her role as curator, Brewer is a fellow at the Center for Integrative Photographic Studies at Indiana University and a member of the Print Council of America, Midwest Art History Society, and the National Society of Arts and Letters. Prior to joining the Eskenazi Museum of Art, Brewer was a lecturer, interpreter, and research assistant at the T. C. Steele State Historic Site in Belmont, Indiana. Brewer received both her BA in fine arts and MA in art history from Indiana University.
