Leonardo Drew’s prints, at once powerfully large yet fragile, test the versatility of the medium, transforming cotton paper pulp and pigment into what suggests densely populated cities, a forest, or an urban wasteland. Evocative of fire, soil, sky, and water, there are strong perceptions in both microcosmic and macrocosmic scale.

At the museum, history is kept in the present while the works of living artists are collected to look toward the future. Museums show how human history ebbs and flows like the tide, with current events washing over and echoing moments from the past. All the artists represented in Currents are people of color, women-identifying, or queer—identities that historically have been underrepresented in museum collections, including those of the Eskenazi Museum. Each of these newly acquired works supports the museum’s teaching and research mission.

In the Setswana language spoken by artist Mohau Modisakeng's family, life is thought of as a passage and is called botshelo, which means “to cross over.” Humans are called bafeti (voyagers), a word that acknowledges the transience of the human experience. To reflect on South Africa's complex histories of colonialism and 20th-century Apartheid, the South African Department of Arts and Culture commissioned Mohau Modisakeng to make Passage for the South African pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennial in 2017.

Direct Contact: Cameraless Photography Now

How does one experience a photograph that appears “unphotographic”? Focusing on the material and tactile properties of the medium, Direct Contact: Cameraless Photography Now is the first contemporary survey to examine cameraless photography across generations, cultures, and ideologies. Referred to as photograms or contact prints, cameraless photographs are made using analogue photography’s foundational elements: light, chemistry, and light-sensitive surfaces.

Designing with Dyes: Connecting Cloths and Ideas in West Africa

Textiles displayed in this exhibition explore the changing uses of dyes in cloth making during the twentieth century in West Africa. It features cloths made by Asante, Bamana, Fula, and Yorùbá artists including indigo-dyed textiles and “mud” dyed bògòlanfini cloth among others. Designing with Dyes explores how people have circulated materials, technologies, and knowledge through cloth.

This student-curated focus exhibition explores the rich imagery of vase painting in ancient Greece. It is being developed by IU students in the Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Research Experience (ASURE) program, with the mentorship of Dr. Julie Van Voorhis and Ancient Art curator Juliet Graver Istrabadi.

Measuring Time: The Photographs of Jeffrey A. Wolin

Featuring approximately one hundred works, this retrospective exhibition covers Wolin’s entire career with key selections from all ten of his major series, including his earliest landscapes and portraits of stonecutters, Holocaust survivors, war veterans, and people experiencing homelessness.

Rhythms: Weaving in West Africa

This exhibition explores the dynamics of weaving, as it encourages viewers to consider links between the rhythms of production and cloth patterns made during the twentieth century. Featuring cloths from Ghana, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast, Rhythms also addresses resonances across cultures from the spread of loom technology in West Africa. All textiles displayed in this exhibition are loans from William M. Itter, Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, who taught in the IU School of Fine Arts for more than three decades.

Magic Ledger: The Drawings of Saul Steinberg

Saul Steinberg (American, 1914–1999) brought a modernist aesthetic and cosmopolitan sophistication to his gallery art and commercial work—including eighty-five covers and more than twelve hundred internal drawings for The New Yorker magazine—endearing him to many artists, writers, and popular audiences of his era. As Steinberg said, “The purpose of drawing is to make people feel that there is something else beyond the perception. That is essentially what I am playing with—the voyage between perception and understanding.”

Adam Magyar: Matter

Hungarian-born video artist and photographer Adam Magyar has studied the relationship between time and moving images extensively. Fixing a camera inconspicuously in public spaces throughout his worldwide travels, Magyar captured hours of human foot traffic, layering the video recordings upon each other and replacing the urban cacophony with a solemn, meditative soundtrack. The resulting images depict the ghostly traces of dense human presence in otherwise still environments, shifting the focus to the spaces that remain stable as life passes by.

Interwoven: Basketry and Visual Culture in Cameroon

This focus exhibition explores how basketry in the Grasslands region of Cameroon intersects with wider visual culture. It considers this topic through two main directions: one, the connections between the form of baskets and that of artworks made with other materials, and second, the widespread use of basketry in a variety of settings and cultural practices. Interwoven presents a selection of twentieth-century objects used in ceremonial and domestic settings, including dance rattles, baskets for honey, woven bags, palm wine pitchers, and storage baskets.

Jennings Tofel: Spiritual Modernist

This focus exhibition presents four paintings by Jewish American expressionist artist Jennings Tofel (1891–1959) from the Eskenazi Museum of Art’s permanent collection. Interlacing in African Textiles

This focus exhibition explores the concept of interlacing through a display of nineteenth and twentieth-century textiles from West and Central Africa. It discusses interlacing through African woven and dyed textiles worn as clothing, as well as the use of textiles in hats, masks, and currency. This exhibition was developed in collaboration with contemporary fiber artist Beatrice Atencah, who is an MFA candidate in the IU School of Art, Architecture, and Design.

Portraits of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna: An Exploration of Roman Imperial Identity and Power

This focus exhibition examines the intersection of public-facing art and political propaganda during the reign of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus (193–211 CE). Severus, the Libyan-born founder of the Severan dynasty, and his Syrian-born wife, Julia Domna, used their portraits to center themselves as the rightful rulers of an increasingly complex and multicultural society.

Terry Winters, distinguished American artist known for his abstract paintings and works on paper, has been making prints for over forty years. This exhibition examines his printed work since 2000, a technically innovative period during which he introduced, in addition to his editioned prints, artist’s books and monoprints. Winters explores the tensions between our rational understandings of the world and its ineffable nature. He imbues his art with philosophical, scientific, and spiritual meanings that extend it beyond pure abstract form.

Crossroads: The Paintings of John Mellencamp

This survey of John Mellencamp's artwork includes large-scale oil portraits and multi-media pieces that document the heart and soul of America with a rich sense of narrative. Sweet Talk: Commissions (1987–2006) is a project by artist Walid Raad that documents Beirut’s residents, buildings, streets, stairs, squares, monuments, storefronts, and gardens. This video is a portion of the larger project.

Recognized for her sophisticated approach to color, composition, and technique, Blanche Hoschedé-Monet (1865–1947) was part of a successful network of artists in Giverny, Rouen, and Paris during the first half of the twentieth century, although she is most often recognized for her relation to Claude Monet, her stepfather and one of France’s most famous painters.
