The Sicán elite utilized art and architecture as a demonstration of their power and wealth. This may explain the frequent depiction of a figure in ornamental dress who is larger and more prominent than the other figures depicted on a vessel. The smaller figures all face the central figure in a prostrate position.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
