About this Work

Miniature portraits, first popular in the Renaissance, enjoyed a golden age in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, before the advent of photography. Intimate in scale, they were often worn as jewelry or carried in a pocket. Photography made such personal portraits inexpensive and accessible to a wide audience, driving the miniature painter into obsolescence.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
