About this Work

Indigo-dyed cloths have been widely made in West Africa, where their cultural significance and use vary by ethnicity and change over time. This example is a cloth wrapper—a common form of clothing in Guinea, Mali, and other parts of West Africa—in which the wearer wraps the cloth around the chest or waist. Some people in West Africa have used indigo-dyed cloth to express various identities, and by the late twentieth century, associations with indigo-dyed cloths in Guinea had shifted to include expressions of national identity.
