About this Work

Job, a biblical figure whom God caused to suffer terribly for the sole purpose of testing Job’s faithfulness, resonated with many artists after the Holocaust. His suffering—exacerbated by friends who claimed he must deserve his torments—seemed to reflect the senseless suffering inflicted upon Holocaust victims and the insensitivity often shown to survivors. Job’s story also connected well with the theological doubts that many Jews, feeling themselves abandoned by God, struggled with after the war.
