Band and pendant fine tapestry weave of purple, brown, and cream, with a darned braid-like border on one side, and a leaf-shaped medallion with a floral motif in the center. A fish motif appears in an oblong, as well as smaller ones in the center stripe of vine-like motifs, bordered by a few sets of framing and meander.
The vibrant Coptic style is especially well-documented in the textiles of the period. Many of these textiles, although fragmentary, have been remarkably preserved. This occurred because clothing was incorporated into funerary customs, and also because of the dry Egyptian climate.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
