Necklace made from continuous overlapping egg-shaped loops of silver.
Best known for his mobiles and large sculptures, Calder also designed many unique pieces of jewelry for friends and family members. He made this collar-style necklace featuring egg-shaped loops fashioned from a single piece of silver for his sister Margaret. In emphasizing simple, biomorphic forms and avoiding the use of precious gems, Calder differentiated his jewelry from the mass-produced, impersonal appearance typical of designer jewelry.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
