Across sub-Saharan Africa, people gather to play local versions of mancala, a strategy game that is played with a game board, such as this, and multiple markers (usually pebbles, seeds, or the like). The object of the game is to capture an opponent's markers. It is a pastime particularly associated with elderly men, who are free from most daily responsibilities and therefore have the time to meet with friends for conversation and friendly competition.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
