The hairstyle of this Yoruba ruler, with a braid projecting from the top and extending down the back, identifies him as a hunter. In this sculpture, the rider, with his jaw proudly jutting forward, visually dominates his mount, creating an image of strength and authority, which is enhanced by the inclusion of his weapons. This is a man who possesses the skills necessary to master nature, putting him in control of the physical world.
