About this Work

The Little Gypsy launched Frederick Porter Vinton’s career when he exhibited it at the Paris Salon of 1878, just after he had completed three years of study in Paris and Munich. In this work, Vinton adopted the loose brushwork and dark palette associated with the Munich art academy. The subject, a peasant woman dressed in the traditional costume of southern Italy, also reflects the Munich Academy’s emphasis on the portrayal of general, rather than specific, figural types. However, Vinton, who settled in Boston, later established a reputation as a leading society portraitist.
