A vertical landscape composition of the sea and a rocky shoreline. Three figures are rowing across the waves in the midground and there are sailboats at the horizon line. The sun casts golden light out from behind scattered clouds.

Waves crash as sunlight breaks through stormy clouds in this view of Grand Manan Island, off the coast of Maine. Markedly different from the tranquil scenes Alfred Thompson Bricher normally painted, this stormy seascape embodies the Romantic concept of the “sublime,” which refers to the awe-inspiring qualities of the natural world. Perhaps inspired by the grandeur of this landscape, Bricher departed from his usual meticulous technique, painting this view of the Bishop’s Rock on Grand Manan with bravura brushwork.
