About this Work

An abstract female figure such as this was given to a Doë girl as part of her initiation into adulthood, which included a lengthy period of seclusion within the family compound. The figure was considered family property, but, as its temporary custodian, the girl was expected to care for it and ensure its safekeeping. The figures are associated with fertility and are also considered a way to maintain contact with clan ancestors.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
