Shirk’s early works were influenced by Alma Eikerman, her MFA mentor at Indiana University. The natural world and the Art Deco style of the 1920s are other important inspirations. She is best known for the richly colored surfaces of her metal vessels. She applies the color with paint, colored pencil, or patinization.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
