About this Work

Anne Noggle turned to photography later in life after previous careers as a bomber pilot and crop duster. Her unusual background gave her a unique perspective on society. Favoring a straight approach to photography, she specialized in portraits of the elderly, particularly women. During a stay on the Indiana University campus as an artist-in-residence, she regularly visited a home for the aged and destitute near Spencer, Indiana. Her portraits, which maintain the anonymity of the residents, often show the sitters in their rooms surrounded by their personal belongings. In doing so, Noggle humanized the institutional setting by treating her subjects as unique individuals. The home closed its doors in 2002.

Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art has four prints from this series (Eskenazi Museum of Art 89.2A–.2D).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
