This handwoven cloth, designed for a woman to wear wrapped around her body, contains repeating patterns. While further research is needed on the specific symbolism of these patterns, handwoven cloths provide a snapshot of dress practices at a particular moment in time. They also offer insights on cultural preferences for motifs, color combinations, and ways to wear woven cloth as well as trade and available materials.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
