About this Work

Made to hold palm wine, a mildly intoxicating beverage fermented from the sap of certain palm trees, this cup was carved as a prestige object. The head's features, such as the upturned nose, are similar to those found on many Pende masks.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
