About this Work

After Poland became a satellite of the Soviet Union after World War II, Fangor, a Warsaw native, tried painting in the officially recognized style of Socialist Realism. Finding this unfulfilling, he began experimenting with abstraction in the mid-1950s. Working alone, he developed a style characterized by meticulously brushed zones of graduated color. During a visit to the United States in the early 1960s, he was introduced to Color Field painting and Op Art, and recognized their affinity with his own work. Fangor immigrated to the US in 1966, painting M40–1967 the following year. In 1999, he returned to post-communist Poland to participate in the country’s contemporary art scene.
