Louise Nevelson combined found objects, unifying them by coating their surfaces in a layer of monochrome paint. Though many of Nevelson’s sculptures consist of large-scale, open-faced compartments filled with objects, Small Cities III, a set of drawers with a concealable interior, is more intimate. Although composed of items associated with domestic work, including buttons and clothespins, Nevelson has transformed them into aesthetic objects.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
