About this Work

Decorated vessels often served multiple functions and could be used in both daily life and/or as a part of funerary rituals. This wine bucket presents a young man who is identified as a hunter and is surrounded by mourners. It does not depict an actual funeral but serves as a memorial for the deceased.

Notes:

[1] Bank Leu AG (Ltd) was a Swiss private bank from 1755-2007. In 1949, Leo Mildenberg (1913-2001) was hired to manage the numismatic department within the bank, and, under his guidance, this branch of the bank became a successful auction house. Mildenberg continued as a managing director at Bank Leu until his retirement in 1983; he was also well-known as a scholar and philanthropist.

[2] Galleria Casa Serodine was established in Ascona, Switzerland, by Wladimir Rosenbaum in 1937. Rosenbaum (1894-1984) was a Swiss lawyer, antiquarian, and art dealer.
