A vessel with a rounded body and a banded neck, which tapers upward to a wider, shallow bowl form at the top with a flared lip. The rounded base of the vessel is inscribed with decorative bands of thin lines, and the neck is carved with a pattern of thick rings.
Nupe potters, traditionally women, who pass their ceramic skills and knowledge to their daughters, are known for creating well-made vessels covered with intricate surface patterns that are usually both refined and precise.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
