This allegorical composition celebrates the art and culture of ancient Rome. Hyacinthe Collin de Vermont specialized in scenes from classical mythology and the Bible, reflecting his training as a history painter at the Académie de France in Rome from 1716 to 1720. Upon his return to Paris, Collin de Vermont was appointed professor at the Académie Royale. He frequently displayed his work at the Paris Salon, the city’s most important annual exhibition. This oil sketch is related to a painting he exhibited at the Salon of 1758.
