Herwarth Walden (born Georg Lewin) was the founder of Der Sturm, an influential Berlin gallery and associated periodical. In the years around World War I, he championed Expressionism, Cubism, and Dada, and helped forge ties between modernist artists from Germany, Russia, France, and Italy. In this portrait, William Wauer sought to express Walden’s modernist interests by blending aspects of Expressionism and Futurism. In addition to working as a sculptor, Wauer was a theatre and film director in Berlin.
