A mountainous landscape with a village at the center. There is a church steeple on the right, and a large tree in the central foreground. The houses and buildings are primarily white and red, thereby standing out from the lush green background.
In 1919‒20, Jean Dufy painted two views of this Vosges mountain village in eastern France. The composition displays some of the simplification and vibrancy of color associated with pre-World War I avant-garde movements (such as the Fauvist style practiced by the artist’s brother, Raoul Dufy). This landscape, however, also exhibits the more subdued sense of realism that characterized much French painting after the war, when many artists adhered to a call for a cultural “return to order.”
