This small sculpture, with its roughly modeled, impressionistic surface, reflects the influence of sculptors, such as Rodin, whose work Matisse studied in the late 1890s. It was produced around the same time as Matisse's first prints, which include a half dozen sketches of the nude. These early "Fauve" prints often had more in common with Matisse's sculptures than his paintings and shared their somewhat asexual, bulky representative of the female form.
