Koppel’s organic, abstracted designs for hollowware, as seen in this curvilinear wine pitcher, helped establish the streamlined aesthetic for postwar Scandinavian design. Koppel studied sculpture in Paris and at the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1943 he and his family fled Nazi-occupied Copenhagen for Sweden, where he began working with metals. In 1945 he signed a contract with the Danish design firm of Georg Jensen.
