This image depicts a desert landscape with two pyramids or mound-like formations partially covered with sand. Three small figures are visible in the foreground.
One of the most successful photographers of the nineteenth century, Francis Frith made three trips to Egypt and the Near East in the 1850s to photograph ancient and modern sites. The first photographer to visit Egypt, Frith was encumbered by heavy, awkward equipment and extreme environmental conditions in the desert. In England, great excitement was generated by his photographs of Egypt. The London Times lauded his photographs for their ability to “carry us far beyond anything that is in the power of the most accomplished artist to transfer to his canvas.” The Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art’s collection includes another picture from this series, The Ramesseum of El-Kurneh Thebes, Second View (Eskenazi Museum of Art 80.96.2) and another shot in Thebes, The Fallen Colossus (Eskenazi Museum of Art 77.53.3).
