About this Work

Greek religious practices were transactional in nature. Offerings to the gods were given in the hope that, in turn, prayers would be answered. Offerings of food were often made on small outdoor altars, such as the one presented on this vase. Other offerings were given as gifts to temple sanctuaries.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
