Like Jacques Lipchitz, Henri Laurens applied the principles of Cubist painting to sculpture. Initially working in collage and relief, in 1919 he began to create freestanding sculpture. Distinguished by the use of polychrome (painted surfaces), these works are meant to be viewed from multiple perspectives.
