About this Work

Within the Middle Sepik region war and hunting charms were created with a series of curving and pointed hooks. Large examples of this form are owned by a community while smaller examples, such as this one, are owned by individuals and carried as an amulet for success and protection. The hook form that often extends over the head refers to a feather worn by warriors or to a bird beak – an important animal within the Sepik region generally.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
