About this Work

Saint Dorothy, a fourth-century Christian martyr, is accompanied by a small angel bearing flowers that were sent by Dorothy from heaven to those who mocked her for her Christian beliefs. Bernardo Strozzi, a Capuchin monk, trained as an artist in Genoa from 1595 to 1597. In 1630, he moved to Venice, where he received commissions for portraits and religious subjects. This work has been dated to Strozzi’s Genoese period, when he painted several female saints.
