Samaras’s work is characterized by the use of found objects. Like Joseph Cornell, he assembled these objects into compositions with deeply personal meanings. Box #105 may allude to the “chronic unease” he felt as a Greek immigrant in the United States. The box contains numerous sharp objects, from the pins covering its exterior to the mangled forks placed in the drawer.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
