An ivory amulet with circular decorations over the body and a small head at the top. The amulet is widest at the base and tapers upward in a tall, narrow conical shape, curving slightly.
Carved from ivory, a prestige material of the highest order in most of sub-Saharan Africa, amulets such as this one are said to commemorate deceased relatives. They may be given the names of those ancestors and are believed to protect their wearers.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
