A horizontal black-and-white photograph depicts the exterior of a pueblo building. A mule is tied to a post in the center of the image. Two people squint in the sunlight at the right of the image, and a young child perches on the second story of the structure.
The photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Great Depression were instructed to capture the plight of average Americans, including the country’s Indian population. While images like Rothstein’s depict the harsh realities of life on the reservation, others like lee’s carnival performer suggest the gross racial stereotypes that pervaded popular culture during the 1930s—from Hollywood westerns to cigar store Indians.
