A horizontal black-and-white photograph depicts two children standing with their backs to the camera in an open storefront. They are looking at sandwich boards showing movie advertisements. One child wears a knee-length dress with a pinafore collar and the other wears trousers, a belt, and a white t-shirt.
Despite (or, perhaps, because) of the hardships of the Great Depression, many people turned to movies for entertainment and escape. A higher percentage (approximately 65%) of Americans went to the cinema each week in 1930 than at any time since. These images by Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographers capture the excitement of the “golden age” of Hollywood through its posters and grand marquees. (ex. with 200.XX.1.251, 200.XX.12.11)
