New processes enabled itinerant practitioners to create inexpensive cased photographs. Such images were popular during the Civil War with soldiers wanting to celebrate their service and to send mementoes to their loved ones. A typed note found inside this case identifies the sitter as 'Uncle Lije Harper fater of Mason Harper, RR Leroy, III. Born c. 1876 in Virginia.'

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
