This photograph features a rare brass mat manufactured by Holmes, Booth, and Haydens in Waterbury, Connecticut. Patriotic mats with a thirty-star "old Glory" flag, eagle, cannon, drum, or Liberty Shield gained popularity during the Civil War, although relatively few designs were available. An interior label lists the patent dates for the thermoplastic Union Case and 'embracing riveted hinge' as 1856 and 1857, respectively.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
