Brooklyn-based documentary photographer Walter Rosenblum is best known for his urban street scenes from series such as Pitt Street and People of the South Bronx. An active member of the left-leaning New York Photo League since the age of nineteen, he was also interested in capturing the lives of people outside of his own environs. In 1958—in the period immediately following François “Papa Doc” Duvalier’s rise to power—Rosenblum traveled to Haiti where he was moved by the spirit of the people, especially the women and children, as well as by their abject poverty.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
