Betty Hahn studied at Indiana University under the photographer Henry Holmes Smith. She received her BA in 1963 and MFA in 1966. From Smith, Hahn learned that there are many ways to make and print a photograph. Her work displays a wide range of processes and techniques, many more like prints than photographs. But her imagery is deeply rooted in the photographic medium. Hahn looks to the common snapshot, using casual shots of children, family, and friends, as in Metallic Reversal, or to images drawn from the popular press. Frequently, she will use the same image repeatedly to explore combinations of techniques and variations. Since 1976, she has taught photography at the University of New Mexico.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
