Judy Dater, Hollywood, California, 1941 - , Judy Dater received her BA and MA from San Francisco State University, where she studied photogrpahy with Jack Welpott, whom she later married. Dater's works are primarily portraits and figure studies. She explains, "From the beginning, people have been my favorite subject. The human face and body attracted me in all their infinte variety. I built my photographs around the person I had chosen." Dater feels her portraits are rooted in the traditions of nineteenth-century photography, with its clarity and detail. However, her use of a view camera recalls twentieth-century California artists such as Imogen Cunningham. In this photograph, Dater pays homage to the older woman photographer. Her photograph is a humorous, yet sensitive portrait, which demonstrates Dater's ability to use symbols to reveal the sitter's character. A free-lance photographer, Dater has taught at the University of California Extension in San Francisco and the San Francisco Art Institute.
