Cemeteries provided documentary photographers of the Depression-era the opportunity to show the ultimate effects of poverty on the country’s poorest children and to demonstrate regional funerary practices. Modernist photographer Edward Weston was attracted by the monument’s weathered tones and textures and the memento mori of the dead flowers.
