In warm and deep reds, browns, and oranges, a woman holds a child in her lap, pulling him close to her. Behind them, a man sits with his chin on one hand, looking at the mother and child. The three figures fill the composition and are adorned with halos.
The richly luminous palette and monumental figures of this painting, while hallmarks of Andrea del Sarto’s style, also reflect the influence of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, whose work del Sarto saw on a visit to Rome. Originally commissioned by the Florentine patron Zanobi Bracci for a chapel in his villa, this portrayal of the Holy Family became one of del Sarto’s most popular compositions, spurring a demand for copies, of which twenty-one are known today. This version closely resembles the original (now known as the Barberini Holy Family, named after a later owner), suggesting that it was produced in del Sarto’s workshop, probably under the supervision of the artist himself.
