About this Work

This crisp, penetrating portrait depicts the lawyer and statesman Jean-Antoine-Joseph de Bry (1760–1834). Seated before a simple background, he is dressed stylishly in the fashions of 1790s France. Most of Jean-Louis Laneuville’s extant portraits portray leaders of the French Revolution. De Bry served briefly in 1793 as president of the National Convention, the revolutionary government that established a republic and presided over the execution of King Louis XVI. De Bry may have had this portrait—which was publicly exhibited at the Salon of 1793—painted to commemorate this high point in his political career.
