About this Work

The charm of this simple cylindrical bronze box is in its pleasing proportions and fine surface design. The box includes gentle swellings into flat moldings in the center of the body as well as a Lesbian tongue pattern above and below and a long tongue pattern in the center. These three portions are separated by a fine-beaded wire design.

The underside of the foot, whose rim is covered by the lower tongue pattern, is sunken; in its center lies a triple raised circle sequence.

The lid is incorporated into the body design, repeating the Lesbian tongue pattern at the outer border; the wire border framing the central knob repeats the design principle of the bottom. The central knob is shaped like a small perfume bottle. On the underside of the lid are a sequence of circles, which correspond in their spacing to the decoration on the top.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
