Robert Henri had a special affinity for the genre of portraiture. He forged relationships with his sitters, and sought to express each subject’s individual personality. Edith Haworth, Henri’s former student, was bound for Europe in April of 1909 when he captured her likeness on canvas. Depicting her in the action of glancing over her shoulder—as if nodding toward the viewer—Henri presented Haworth as a modern, self-assured woman. The portrait was painted in just one-and-a-half hours. The loose, slashing brushstrokes and Haworth’s casual pose reflect Henri’s spontaneous mode of painting.
