About this Work

The elegant linearity of the four saints and Madonna and Child and the pointed shape of this triptych’s wings are characteristic of the Gothic style, which flourished in Siena, one of Tuscany’s most important artistic centers. This altarpiece may have been used in a hospital, perhaps Santa Maria della Scala in Siena, where it would be carried from bed to bed.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
