About this Work

The satyr, recognized by his rounded, slightly pudgy face and unruly, wildly flowing hair, dances a wide pirouette on his left toe. His right leg is drawn up and bent at the knee, his right arm rests on his right thigh in an apparent dance gesture. His left hand is raised high with the palm up, complementing his rapturously thrown-back head.

The modelling of torso and limbs portrays the body’s sinewy elasticity and slender frame precisely and tightly without appearing graphic. This, and the overall style of the statuette, are reminiscent of sculpture form Alexandria, where the exaggerated postures of whirling dancers were also preferred.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
