About this Work

At a time when abstraction dominated in the art world, Baskin focused exclusively on the figure. The son of an Orthodox rabbi, Baskin frequently turned to biblical themes, drawing even upon the New Testament. After World War II, his work also reveals a preoccupation with death. With Lazarus, he turned to a story in the Gospel of John, in which Jesus brings the dead Lazarus back to life. In Baskin’s interpretation, however, we see only the lifeless figure wrapped in a burial shroud.
