About this Work

Masks such as this celebrate the contributions that individual male age groups make to their community. The ability of a group to acquire a mask, its costume, and organize its performance is said to show the group members' ability to work together for the community's benefit. The mask depicts an elephant as a reference to that animal's strength and energy, which is likened to the powerful spirit associated with elders.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
